Michigan woman surprised to find marijuana in mail
Friday, 30 July 2010 00:00

A Mich. woman found a fragrant surprise among her bills, catalogs and junk mail: a whole lot of marijuana.  Happy day!

Police in Blackman Township west of Detriot said the surprise 2-pound package of the ganja arrived in the mail last week at the elderly woman's home. She called police, who say they don't know who sent the weed as the Arizona return address on the package was bogus, according to the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

Police say the pot is worth about $2,400. JackPOT!

The marijuana either was sent to the woman's home by mistake or someone planned to snatch it from the mailbox before she checked, Deputy Director Jon Johnston told the newspaper. Police seized the pot and say it will be destroyed.

Mich. is one of 14 states that allows 2.5 oz of medical marijuana per person, or 12 plants.

$35 million of marijuana removed from Angeles National Forest
Thursday, 29 July 2010 00:00

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST - Authorities uprooted about $35 million worth of marijuana plants from dozens of sites in the Angeles National Forest north of Azusa on Friday, sheriff's officials said.

A multi-agency task force took the plants from pre-identified marijuana grows, Capt. Ralph Ornelas of the sheriff's Narcotics Bureau said in a written statement.

"The team simultaneously entered three mountainous canyons," Ornelas said.

"The team eradicated a total of 17,493 illicit marijuana plants from public lands," he added. "The sites included extensive irrigation systems and campsites."

No arrested were made during the operation, sheriff's officials said.

In addition to the pot, about 950 pounds of refuse was removed from the marijuana gardens, Ornelas said. It included hazardous chemical fertilizers, pesticides, spraying equipment, propane tanks, food and live ammunition, authorities said.

Ex-Pacers F Williams arrested, charged
Wednesday, 28 July 2010 00:00

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Troubled former Indiana Pacers  forward Shawne Williams has been arrested after police found marijuana and a loaded gun in the car he was driving.

Memphis police say Williams and his former University of Memphis teammate Kareem Cooper were pulled over in a Dodge Charger on Friday because Williams wasn't wearing a seat belt. He was charged with driving on a suspended license.

Police then searched the car and say they found more than 17 grams of marijuana and a gun on Cooper. Police said they did not know whether the two men have attorneys.

The Pacers chose Williams with their first-round draft pick in 2006, but his NBA career has been marred by numerous off-court issues, arrests and weight problems.

California’s marijuana factories seen as cash pot solution
Tuesday, 27 July 2010 00:00

The city of Oakland, in California, is bidding to become the Silicon Valley of marijuana cultivation, following a council vote to approve four huge cannabis factories, taxed and regulated by the authorities.

The contentious measure passed 5-2, despite the protests of small-scale growers, who argue that industrialisation will drive family farms operating at the margins of the law out of business.

Oakland, the impoverished sister city of San Francisco, has long been at the forefront of the legalisation movement. It already taxes the sale, at dispensaries, of marijuana for medical purposes with an annual turnover of $28million. With a state-wide referendum on legalising possession for recreational use due in November, Oakland is positioning itself to take full advantage of the increased tax revenues from this growth industry.

The coalition seeking to relax laws governing the sale of cannabis is essentially unchanged since the 1960s. Libertarians find common ground with left-wing pot smokers, while civil rights campaigners argue that because of disproportionate arrest rates for young black men, current drug statutes perpetuate racial inequality.

Bret Michaels Caught with Weed on His Tour Bus
Monday, 26 July 2010 00:00

Rocker Bret Michaels  ran into a little trouble Wednesday night (Jul 21) when cops found marijuana and other controlled drugs on his tour bus during a traffic stop in Northeast Indiana.

No arrests were made during the stop, however citations were handed out and the evidence was passed on to the DeKalb County prosecutor to make a decision on issuing any charges. Michael’s representative sent out a statement regarding the incident:

“Officers on the scene claimed there were no trailer tag lights. No arrests were made. Mr. Michaels allowed an open search of the buses and everything was handled in a professional manner.”

What’s up with all these celebrities getting pulled over with drugs? It’s starting to seem a little petty…
