Marijuana Expo across the street from Disneyland
Monday, 30 August 2010 00:00

August 28, 2010 -- Going to the Disneyland Resort today? Don't inhale. Literally. The idea that the pot convention of all time is across the street at the Anaheim Convention Center isn't a joke, it's really going on right now with over 15,000 expected to attend. Awkward!

The event called, Know Your Rights Expo has a big draw from the Southern California area. According to their website, this appears to be more of a consumer show:

The Expo will feature hundreds of vendor booths for attendees to browse and shop for the latest products and services as well as a separate stage area that will feature live entertainment and speakers on medical cannabis, legalization, media and other topics related to the emerging industry.

While it doesn't really matter what side of the coin you are on when it comes to pot, it will make you scratch your head and wonder why is this conference so close to the 'Happiest Place on Earth.' Well, I haven't been given an answer to that but if you smell reefer in the park you definitely know where they got it, right?

Medical marijuana users can be fired
Sunday, 29 August 2010 00:00

WASHINGTON, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Only one of the 14 U.S. states that have legalized medical marijuana protects users from being fired if they fail a drug test, a lawyer says.

Cynthia Estlund, who teaches labor law at New York University, told The New York Times employers are not required to dismiss marijuana users either. Part of the problem is that marijuana remains illegal under federal law, the newspaper reported Saturday.

The Rhode Island law legalizing marijuana for medical reasons bans employers or landlords from penalizing users.

"The current state of affairs puts employers in a very difficult situation," Barbara L. Johnson, a Washington employment lawyer, said. "But the reality is that there are no federal guidelines like there are when dealing with other types of prescription medications."

Employers who have fired people who tested positive say the issue is safety. Joseph Casias, a cancer patient, was fired from his job at a Michigan Walmart last year.

"This is obviously an unfortunate situation all around," a company spokesman, Greg Rossiter, said. "But we have to consider the overall safety of our customers and our associates."

Facebook Should Stop Censoring Legalization Campaign Ads
Saturday, 28 August 2010 00:00

Facebook is facing down another embarrassing episode of censorship this week after refusing to show ads submitted by the Just Say Now marijuana legalization campaign.

The gag is an important reminder that social networks like Facebook — while useful, interesting, and pretty — are "walled gardens" with overseers whose interests can overwrite free speech, open communication, and in this case, essential political debate. (In this they have something in common with Apple.)

Most recently, Facebook was caught censoring mentions of Power.com, an online tool designed to help users collect their information from Facebook to facilitate migration to other social networks. To this day, users are still blocked from sending messages or posting status updates containing the word "Power.com," preventing users from spreading the word about a convenient way to "make the move" to Orkut, or LinkedIn, or any other social networking service that may crop up to compete. The block even stopped law professor Eric Goldman from commenting on Facebook’s lawsuit against Power.com (Disclosure: EFF filed an amicus brief in support of Power in that case).

Suspects with BB guns, marijuana released
Friday, 27 August 2010 00:00

Police arrested two men suspected of shooting a man in West Seattle with an Airsoft gun or pellet rifle, but they were released after the victim told an officer he didn't want to pursue assault charges.

One of the suspects also admitted to possessing 41.8 grams of marijuana, though Seattle City Attorney Pete Holmes has said charges will not be filed for instances of marijuana possession.

About 11:30 p.m., the victim was walking in the 7200 block of California Avenue Southwest when a black Ford pickup drove by, and the man was shot in the right wrist by an Airsoft BB.

The man then ran to his vehicle and chased the Ford to the parking lot of the Alaska Junction.

He "stated that he could see what looked like the barrel of a large and skinny gun slightly sticking out of the passenger window," Officer Ryan Levens wrote in an incident report. "(The victim) then called 911 to report the incident."

Two other officers stopped the suspects in an alley to the east of the 4700 block of California Avenue Southwest. Police say one of the men tossed the marijuana out a window in a cardboard box.

Fake Tombstone Filled With Marijuana
Thursday, 26 August 2010 00:00

There was something unusual about a tombstone passing through the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport outside of Cincinnati, Ohio.

For one, it was a tombstone being shipped by air.  Secondly, it was in honor of Delroy Senior, no first name (or last name).  Thirdly, he was late of Jamaica and England.  As if that wasn’t suspicious enough, the concrete tombstone was painted to look like granite.  A quick pass by of the drug dog revealed that the fake granite tombstone was stuffed with 52 pounds of marijuana.

The clue most obvious to the customs agents was the shipment.  ”It all came down to, why would you ship a tombstone?” said Customs spokesman Brian Bell.  ”They can be made anywhere.”

That’s a very good point.  Man, drug smugglers will defile anything to move their product.  No respect for the dead Delroy Senior, no respect for black velvet paintings of Jesus, and no respect for the sanctity of the airplane.
