Miami Heat Forward Udonis Haslem Arrested for Possession
Saturday, 21 August 2010 00:00

MIAMI (CBS/WFOR) Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem was arrested late Sunday afternoon following a traffic stop.

The 30-year-old NBA player was originally pulled over for speeding and illegal window tint; however, the arresting officer said it was clear once he approached the vehicle that there was something else going on behind the doors of Haslem's Mercedes.

According to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky, in addition to the traffic violations, both Haslem and his passenger Antwain Fleming were arrested and charged for possession of marijuana.

Haslem was charged with one count of possessing more than 20 grams of marijuana, 4 counts of possessing drug paraphernalia with intent to use, and was cited by the FHP for speeding, and for having illegal window tinting on his car, reports CBS affiliate WFOR.

Sources told TMZ that in addition to Fleming there were three other people in the car at the time of the traffic stop and also, that it took three searches for police and the drug dogs to discover the marijuana.

Haslem, who has spent seven years with the Heat, was taken to the Miami-Dade County Jail and released Sunday evening after posting a $10,000 bail.

Mapping The Legal Marijuana Industry

If a November proposition passes, plenty of moneymakers will want in.

Marijuana Cheesecake: Good Medicine or Cause for Outrage?
Thursday, 19 August 2010 00:00

Have you ever gotten a prescription for cheesecake? How about pizza with a side order of chocolate chip Rice Krispy cakes?

It's not usually what the doctor ordered, but for medical marijuana patients the taste of "medicine" is getting increasingly sweet.

As of now, 14 states and the District of Columbia have legalized the use of medical marijuana, but growing and selling it is still a federal offense.

So, those who sell medical marijuana are operating in a gray area, but that hasn't stopped them from getting very creative.
Operators from Oregon to California are selling marijuana packed gourmet desserts and even entire meals.

By now, the medical benefits of marijuana are well documented.

Studies have shown that pot is effective in reducing muscle spasms associated with multiple sclerosis and pain caused by certain neurological injuries or illnesses. Other studies have shown that marijuana can help with muscle spasms and the pain associated with spinal cord injuries and AIDS.

Would you hire this guy?

Probably not. But according to a new analysis by the California Chamber of Commerce, if Proposition 19 passes and he shows up for a job interview, has all the right qualifications, and is the best man for the job, you’d have to hire him, regardless of his apparent fondness for marijuana.

Supes address synthetic marijuana
Tuesday, 17 August 2010 00:00

DESOTO COUNTY - DeSoto County officials don't want the future of the area's youth to go up in smoke, so they took action to ban the sale, use or distribution of manufactured synthetic marijuana substances, which give the "high" of herbal marijuana.

DeSoto County's law goes into effect Sept. 1. A new state law is expected to be enacted after the state Legislature meets in January.

"It's one of the things we have to do to protect our juveniles," DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco said Monday after the Board of Supervisors held a public hearing on a new law affecting the sale, use and distribution of synthetic cannabinoids or manufactured marijuana substances. "There is a growing problem with this all over the state. Getting on this drug is more dangerous than getting on regular marijuana."

Possession, sale or use of the substances, also known as K-2, Spice and other assorted names, has already been prohibited in the cities of Horn Lake, Hernando, Southaven and Olive Branch.

A least one store in Southaven was shut down due to the sale of the substance and has since reopened following warnings by police.

A store owner can now be charged with a felony after sale of the banned substance under the new law, after three or more citations.

District 4 Supervisor Allen Latimer said he hoped the county would consider harsher penalties for repeat offenders.

Manufacturers have also been put on notice the synthetic marijuana is now prohibited in DeSoto County.

"These guys out here making this stuff are always one step ahead of us," Rasco said.

During the public hearing, one resident asked if the law could be broadened to include newly emerging manufactured drugs.

County Attorney Tony Nowak said if the law was too broad, it would be constitutionally vague.
